बारह बरस में एक बार खिलने वाले

नीलकुरिंजी के फूलों की तरह।

तब तलक के

सारे बसंत

बेअसर जाएंगे मुझपे।।

 बाजार

दुडक्या चालीच्या सडकेच्या काठाकाठाने

बाजार भरतो बेमालूम

चहू बाजूंनी क्षितिजाच्या वारुळातून

सुसाट सुटतात माणसं बाजाराच्या दिशेने

मागे ठेवून आपले डोंगराळ वास्तव्य.

गिर्‍हाईकपणाचा पास फाडून

शिरतात बाजारात

हल्लाबोलच्या आवेशात

त्यांच्या बटव्यातून खणखणतात

शस्त्रवजा धातूतून पाडलेली

धार ठेचलेली सभ्य, नागर नाणी

हारीने मांडलेल्या वस्तू चकित चमकतात-

स्थलांतराने उत्तेजित झालेल्या.

जिन्नसपणाचा शृंगार केलेल्या वस्तू

करतात रंगीबेरंगी नेत्रपल्लवी

दुर्मीळतेने सुरकुतलेले डोळे समोरचे

विस्फारतात पाहून

उघडी पडलेली अस्ताव्यस्त उपलब्धता

सांगोपांग.

बाजार विस्कटून टाकतो

नकाशा दुर्मीळतेचा नखशिखान्त

आणि ओळखता येत नाहीत

आपणच निगुतीने वाढवलेल्या

आपल्या इच्छांच्या बागा

आणि आपल्या घडण्याचाच भाग असलेले

आपल्या हव्यासाचे स्वतंत्र प्रदेश.

'Waves' : The New Yorker cover by Sempe'

 

“It’s an obsession,” Jean-Jacques Sempé says, of his cover for the new issue. “I would love to become a child on the beach once again. It may sound infantile, but that’s the feeling I long for: to be a child without care, taking in the immensity of the ocean and still feeling safe.”

 

Sempe’ has the distinction of doing more New Yorker covers than probably any other artist ( he has done more than 110 !)
